Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution.”

 -Theodosius Dobzhansky

Whilst cats and porn may lay claim to vast swathes of the internet there is still more than enough space for the millions upon millions of blogs and sites devoted to health, fitness and diet.

Where to begin?

Even with an understanding of biochemistry and an ability to read and understand scientific literature I found myself, no doubt along with countless others, asking that question.

I grew up in the era of low fat, cholesterol is bad, wholegrain is good. I had it drummed into me and followed it almost religiously. Even when I had inkling reading through Stryer and other textbooks that something might be amiss I followed it. Blindly, you might say.

And now it seems that what we were told and the science that it was based on was either misleading or simply not true. Peeling back the layers further it might be that just about everything, in one way or another, that we accept about health is wrong. Or is it? Where is the evidence?

Coming back to the question “Where to begin?” I decided to choose the beginning. The absolute beginning. As the quote at the top states nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution. And whilst there are foolish individuals who might take issue with evolution on ideological grounds, you can’t argue with biology. It is what it is and it does what it will. You can only try to understand the how and the why.

So, this is my attempt to understand.

I don’t know it all and won’t pretend that I do. No-one does. And so the key word here for me is humility, the willingness to accept that I don’t know everything and that I might be wrong. That doesn’t mean I’m going to be stumbling around in the dark. I have a good grasp of biochemistry, though keeping the issue of humility in mind I’m not afraid to or unwilling to go back and look at the basics again. In the last couple of years I’ve jumped into the literature and try to keep abreast of the science.

I want answers, I want to understand the how and the why and how I can apply that knowledge to better my health and maybe the health of others too.

But this is also only a beginning and in keeping with the name and the idea the site, my ideas and philosophy will evolve over time, and just like evolution only time will tell where we end up.
